Thanksgiving Turkey Cupcakes
A Fun & Easy Thanksgiving Cupcake Design
These colourful Thanksgiving turkey cupcakes are the sweetest way to celebrate the season!
Each cupcake is decorated with bright buttercream “feathers” in red, orange, and yellow, and finished with a cute chocolate turkey face. They’re fun to make, easy to decorate, and guaranteed to be a hit at your Thanksgiving table.
Whether you’re baking with kids, making something special for a school party, or adding a playful dessert to your holiday spread, these turkey cupcakes are full of colour, creativity, and festive charm.
The Design
I started by making a batch of my Basic Buttercream and dividing it in half ,one half for chocolate and the other for the colourful feathers. To make the chocolate buttercream, I mixed in cocoa powder and cream until smooth but you could also use brown food gel as an alternative.
For the feathers, I divided the plain buttercream into three bowls and tinted each one red, orange, and yellow using gel food colouring. (You can see my full How to Colour Buttercream guide for tips.)
I used my “pipe and swipe” technique for the feathers by piping dots of each colour around the edge of the cupcake and swiping them with a piping tip. I finished by piping a chocolate buttercream in the centre for the turkey’s head, then added two candy eyes and an orange M&M for the beak. For the final touch, a little red buttercream creates the little wattle, and the turkeys were ready to gobble!

Things I Used
Here are the tools and ingredients I used to make these cupcakes. If you’re recreating them, these links will save you the guesswork:
-
Cupcakes: Any flavour works, but I used my chocolate cupcakes for this design.
-
Buttercream: I used a batch of my Basic Buttercream Recipe and flavoured it with vanilla and cocoa. You can use any flavour you like.
-
Food colour gels: I used Wilton gel colours. You can use any brand but i recommend gel as you don’t need much to achieve a bright colour. Follow my colouring buttercream guide for the best results.
- Piping tips: I used a large star tip (6B) for the feathers and a large round tip (1A) for the body and the head. The wattle is piped using a small round piping tip (3)
-
Piping bags: I used disposable piping bags, I always wash them and reuse them as many times as i can.
-
Orange M and Ms: For the beak, any coloured candy would work.
-
Small candy eyes: I used wilton candy eyes.
-
Small Bowl & Spatulas: For mixing the buttercream colours.
-
Tweezers: For adding the small details, trust me they are worth it.

How to...
Step 1
Make a batch of Basic Buttercream per the recipe instructions. Transfer half of the buttercream to a separate bowl, cover and set aside. Add the cocoa powder and the heavy cream to the other half and mix until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with piping tip 1A. Twist the top of the piping bag and set aside until needed.
Step 2
Divide the remaining buttercream into three separate bowls. Use the gel colours to colour one bowl red, one bowl orange, and the remaining bowl yellow. Remember that the colour develops over time, so you only need a small amount.
Step 3
Add the red buttercream to a piping bag fitted with tip 6B. Pipe a dot onto the edge of the cupcake.
Step 4
Use the large end of a piping tip to swipe the dot into the centre of the cupcake.
Step 5
Repeat with a second red dot on the opposite side of the cupcake, swiping it in to meet the first. These will become the first two turkey feathers.
Step 6
Add the orange buttercream to a piping bag fitted with tip 6B. Pipe a dot onto the edge of the cupcake, to the right of the first red dot. Then, use the extra piping tip to swipe the dot into the centre of the cupcake.
Step 7
Repeat this step with the orange buttercream on the opposite edge of the cupcake, swiping it into the centre.
Step 8
Add the yellow buttercream to a piping bag fitted with tip 6B. Pipe one dot in the space at the edge of the cupcake.
Step 9
Then, swipe the dot into the centre of the cupcake.
Step 10
Using the chocolate buttercream fitted with the 1A tip, pipe a dot in the last open space at the edge of the cupcake, pulling it slightly inward as you lift away.
Step 11
Swipe to the dot into the centre of the cupcake with the extra piping tip..
Step 12
Use the chocolate buttercream and the same round piping tip to add a large dot into the middle of the cupcake, for the turkey head. Smooth the buttercream with a small spatula if needed.
Step 13
Using tweezers, add one orange M&M for the beak, pressing them lightly into the buttercream.
Step 14
Add two small candy eyes above the beak.
Step 15
Transfer red buttercream to a small round tip (3) and pipe a small curved line beside the beak for the turkey’s wattle.
Results – Well Done!

FAQ: Thanksgiving Turkey Cupcakes
Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time?
Yes! You can bake and decorate them up to two days in advance. Store in an airtight container in the fridge and bring to room temperature before serving.
What piping tips do I need for turkey cupcakes?
I used a large star tip (6B) for the feathers, a large round tip (1A) for the body, and a small round tip for the wattle — but any similar sizes will work.
Can I use different colours?
Definitely! Try deeper shades like burgundy, burnt orange, or brown for a more autumnal look.
Do I need to refrigerate them?
I always keep my cakes and toppers in the fridge because i live in Australia. If it’s warm, refrigerate the finished cupcakes until serving time.
