Sorting Hat Cupcakes

Magical Cupcakes with a Secret Sorting Ceremony Inside!

Harry Potter Sorting Hat cupcakes made from chocolate-dipped sugar cones with hidden coloured candy inside.

These Sorting Hat cupcakes are pure Harry Potter magic. When I first shared this design online, it went crazy viral, with over 600 million views across platforms. My most viewed idea to date. With a chocolate covered ice cream cone transformed into a wizarding hat and colourful candies hidden inside, these cupcakes are as magical to make as they are to eat. Perfect for Halloween, Harry Potter birthdays, or any wizarding celebration.

The Design

Each cupcake is topped with a handmade chocolate Sorting Hat, created by reshaping an ice cream cone and coating it in melted chocolate. Texture is added with melted chocolate and a decorating brush to mimic folds and wrinkles. The magic happens when you lift the hat: hidden house-coloured candies spill out, revealing your Hogwarts house.

For this design, you’ll need cones, chocolate, and buttercream, plus colourful candies to represent each house. See my Working with Candy Melts Guide if you’re new to working with chocolate and melts.

Things I Used

Here are the tools and ingredients I used to make these cupcakes. If you’re recreating them, these links will save you the guesswork:

  • Cupcakes – Any flavour works, but I used my chocolate cupcakes for a rich base.

  • Buttercream – Prepared using my Basic Buttercream Recipe and flavoured with cocoa powder. Used for the swirl on top of the cupcakes to support the Sorting Hat.

  • Sugar Cones / Waffle Cones: I used Woolworths brand (AU). In the US, look for sugar cones, as American “waffle cones” are thicker and can crack when cut.

  • Chocolate melts – I used compound chocolate (Nestlé Bakers’ Choice Milk Choc Melts) for this design — it melts smoothly and sets firm without tempering. You can read more about working with compound chocolate and candy melts in my Candy Melts for Beginners Guide

  • Vegetable Shortening (Copha): To thin the candy melts for smoother dipping and coating.
  • Parchment paper – Essential for sitting the cones on as the chocolate won’t stick to it and it gives a clean edge on the brim.

  • Coloured candies – I used M&Ms in red, blue, yellow, and green to represent Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. These are hidden inside the hat for the Sorting Ceremony reveal.

  • Thin decorating brush – Used to paint the folds of the Sorting Hat with the candy melts.

  • Piping bags + tips – I used a 1M piping tip for the buttercream swirl. Disposable or reusable bags work fine.

  • Small serrated knife – For trimming the point off the ice cream cones cleanly.

  • Edible Gold Shimmer Dust: To give your hats that magical finish.

  • 1 Batch of my basic buttercream (Chocolate Flavour)
  • 12 Sugar cones
  • Chocolate candy melts
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable shortening
  • A large bag of M & Ms
  • Edible glitter (optional)

Equipment

  • 1 Piping bag
  • 1 Large star piping tip (1M)
  • A small serrated knife
  • A baking tray/ board (sized for the fridge)
  • A sheet of parchment paper
  • Heatproof bowl
  • A small spoon
  • Cocktail sticks

How to...

Pack of Nestlé Bakers’ Choice Milk Choc Melts with waffle cones on a wooden board, used for making Sorting Hat cupcakes

Step 1

I used Nestlé Bakers’ Choice Milk Choc Melts. They’re smooth, easy to melt, and set perfectly without needing tempering. Add the melts to a heatproof bowl and microwave on low, stirring every 20–30 seconds until smooth and glossy.

Bowls of melted chocolate, chocolate melts, and vegetable shortening on a marble surface, showing how to thin chocolate for dipping sugar cones

Step 2

Once the chocolate is melted, add a spoonful of vegetable shortening and stir until fully combined. This helps the chocolate melt smoothly and gives it a thinner, glossier consistency, perfect for coating the cones evenly. If the chocolate starts to thicken as you work, reheat it in short 15-second bursts on low.

Sugar cones trimmed shorter and the tops cut on a diagonal angle with a serrated knife to create the tilted Sorting Hat shape

Step 3

Use a small serrated knife to carefully trim the bottom of each sugar cone so that it’s slightly shorter. If you want to make them larger then you can skip this part. Next, cut off the pointed end of the cone at a slight angle. Work slowly with a gentle sawing motion so the cone doesn’t crack

Cut cone tip reattached upside down with melted candy melts to create a crooked Sorting Hat shape.

Step 4

Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Dip the cut end of the smaller cone piece into the melted chocolate, then gently press it onto the top of the larger cone, flipping it so it faces the opposite direction.
Hold it in place for a few seconds until it sticks.
If needed, use a little extra melted chocolate around the join to secure it.
Place the assembled hat on the tray and leave it to set completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 5

Once the chocolate has set, dip the pointed end of the cone into the bowl of melted chocolate, coating the tip and about 1–2 cm up the side. Gently tap the cone on the edge of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate before placing it on parchment paper. This step helps create a smooth, even base for adding the final chocolate layer and brim.

Step 6

Place the chocolate-coated cone upright on a sheet of parchment paper and make sure it’s steady before adding more chocolate.

Step 7

Use a spoon to pour melted chocolate onto the sides of the cone, letting it flow naturally down the sides and onto the parchment paper.

Step 8

Using a cocktail stick, guide the chocolate as it pools at the base to form the brim of the hat. Leave it to set completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 9

Once the chocolate has set, use a small decorating brush to paint on the Sorting Hat’s facial features. Start by outlining the mouth and eyes with melted chocolate.

Step 10

Continue painting on the chocolate to build up the eyes, folds, and ridges. Let it set between layers for a thicker, more defined finish.

Step 11

Finish by blending the edges and refining any lines to bring the hat’s expression to life. Transfer the tray to the fridge to allow the hats to set completely.

Step 12

Make a batch of chocolate buttercream, I used my Basic Buttercream Recipe (chocolate flavour) Add it to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (1M) Pipe a swirl onto the top of each cupcake. If the buttercream seems soft, pop the cupcakes onto the fridge to firm up before adding the hats.

Step 13

Remove the hats from the fridge and lift them from the parchment paper. Fill each Sorting Hat with coloured candy pieces to represent the Hogwarts houses. Red for Gryffindor, blue for Ravenclaw, yellow for Hufflepuff, and green for Slytherin.

Chocolate Sorting Hat placed on top of the buttercream swirl to complete the cupcake.

Step 14

Gently place the cupcake upside down onto the filled hat and press lightly so it sticks to the chocolate brim.

Step 15

Carefully flip the cupcake over and set it upright. Dust the hat with edible gold shimmer for a magical finish. When you lift the hat, the coloured candy will spill out to reveal your Hogwarts house!

The Results! Well done.

You’ve just created your very own Sorting Hat Cupcakes, complete with a magical colour reveal inside! Lift the hat to discover your Hogwarts house… will it be Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin.

Notes & Tips

  • Use sugar cones, not waffle cones. Waffle cones are much thicker and will crack when cut. I use thin sugar cones here in Australia, which trim easily. If you’re in the US, look for Keebler or Joy sugar cones.

  • Candy melts are easier than chocolate. Real chocolate needs tempering, but candy melts set quickly and stay shiny. If you’re new to them, check out my Working with Candy Melts Guide.

  • Cut gently. Use a small serrated knife to remove the cone tip cleanly. A slow sawing motion helps prevent cracks.

  • Sort the houses! I used red, blue, yellow, and green candies for each Hogwarts house. If you want a surprise, don’t tell guests which colour is which.

  • Cool the hats before assembling. If the room is warm, pop them in the fridge for 5–10 minutes to set the chocolate completely before placing them on the cupcakes.

Serving Ideas

  • Display them as the centrepiece at a Harry Potter party or Halloween dessert table.

  • Let your guests “get sorted” and lift the hat to reveal their Hogwarts house colour.

  • Pair them with Butterbeer cupcakes or other themed treats for a full wizarding spread.

  • Add little name tags for each house on your dessert table for fun photos.

  • Serve them on a black or gold tray with fairy lights for a magical presentation.

FAQ: Sorting Hat Cupcakes

Can I make the hats ahead of time?
Yes! The chocolate hats can be made 2–3 days in advance. Store them in a cool, dry place or airtight container until ready to use.

Can I use real chocolate instead of candy melts?
You can, but real chocolate must be tempered or it may turn dull or streaky. Candy melts are much easier to melt and shape, especially for beginners.

What kind of cones should I use?
Use sugar cones, not waffle cones. Waffle cones are thicker and tend to crack. Thin sugar cones cut neatly and give the best shape.

Do I need to refrigerate them?
I always keep my cakes and toppers in the fridge because i live in Australia. If it’s warm, refrigerate the finished cupcakes until serving time.

How long do they last?

They’ll stay fresh for 2–3 days if stored in an airtight container in a cool spot.

These Sorting Hat cupcakes are as fun to make as they are to serve. With a little chocolate, some buttercream, and a handful of colourful candies, you can bring a piece of the wizarding world to your kitchen. They’re playful, interactive, and guaranteed to get people talking.
