Easy ghost cupcakes decorated with white buttercream, sanding sugar, and candy eyes. hero

Ghosts are one of the most iconic Halloween symbols, so why not turn them into cupcakes? These easy ghost cupcakes are the perfect mix of spooky and cute. They’re super easy to make with buttercream, a dusting of sanding sugar, and a few simple sprinkles for the face.

Whether you’re making them for a Halloween party, a school event, or just some fun baking at home, these little ghosts are guaranteed to be a crowd favourite. The sparkle catches the light beautifully, making them stand out on any dessert table.

Design

Each cupcake is topped with a buttercream ghost shape, coated in white sanding sugar for sparkle. The ghost has simple sprinkle (or candy melt) eyes and a sweet little smile, giving it a fun, friendly look rather than a scary one.

I used my White Chocolate and Raspberry Cupcake Recipe (but any flavour works as the base) and my Basic Buttercream Recipe for piping the ghost. To achieve the shape, I piped the buttercream into a ghost outline, smoothed it slightly, then dipped it into sanding sugar. A few sprinkle details complete the design.

Why You’ll Love These Easy Ghost Cupcakes

  • Spooky-cute: They’re more sweet than scary, so perfect for kids’ parties.

  • Sparkly finish: The sanding sugar makes them shimmer under the light.

  • Beginner-friendly: Just a round piping tip, buttercream, and a little smoothing.

  • Crowd-pleaser: Everyone loves a friendly ghost on Halloween.

Things I Used to make my Easy Ghost Cupcakes

  • Cupcakes: I used my White Chocolate and Raspberry Cupcakes, but any flavour works.

  • Buttercream: Half a batch of my Basic Buttercream Recipe, coloured white.

  • Piping tip: Large round piping tip (Wilton 2A) for smooth ghost shapes.

  • Spatula: A small offset spatula to smooth out lines in the buttercream.

  • Sanding sugar: White sanding sugar for the sparkly coating.

  • Wooden skewer or cocktail stick: To make little indents for texture.

  • Black Sprinkles or candy melts: Black sprinkles for the eyes are the easiest option (you can also use candy melts if you have them)

  • Pink mini sprinkles: I used these to add little cheeks

How to...

Step 1

Bake your cupcakes and leave them to cool. Make a batch of my basic buttercream and if needed, colour it white. I like to add some white food gel to my buttercream when i’m making things that should be bright white.

Step 2

Add the buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip (Wilton 2A) Pipe a curved line of buttercream around the edge of the cupcake. This is the outline of your ghost.

Step 3

Pipe extra lines of buttercream to fill in the centre of the ghost. Start at the top and pipe a line downward, pulling away at the bottom. Vary the direction you pull away to create movement and a frilly effect at the base of the ghost

Step 4

Use a metal spatula or the back of a small spoon to smooth the buttercream lines together. Don’t worry about the frilly edges at the bottom, leave them as they are as they add to the ghostly look.

Step 5

Pour the white sanding sugar into a small, shallow bowl or plate. Gently press the buttercream ghost into the sugar and tap lightly until the entire surface is coated. Be careful not to change the shape, the aim is simply to add sparkle. This gives the ghosts a gorgeous shimmer and makes the buttercream easier to handle.

Step 6

This is the look you’re aiming for, a smooth, sparkly ghost shape. If you notice any gaps, simply use a spoon to sprinkle extra sanding sugar over the top until it’s fully coated.

Step 7

Using a cocktail stick, gently press lines into the base of the ghost. Make sure the indents are short, otherwise they start to look more like legs then frills. If the buttercream seems too soft, pop the cupcake in the fridge for a few minutes to firm it up and try again.

Step 8

Adding the facial features. Option One: Using two black round sprinkles for the eyes.  For the smiles, add a long curved black jimmie sprinkle for each ghost. finally, add two pink sprinkles for each cheek.

Candy melts piped onto parchment paper.

Step 9

Option Two: Gently melt the black candy melts in the microwave on a low heat setting, then transfer them into a piping bag. On a sheet of parchment paper, pipe two eyes and a smile for each ghost. They don’t need to be identical — have fun with the expressions! Place the sheet in the fridge for about 15 minutes to set.

Step 10 - Easy Ghost Cupcakes

Notes & Tips

  • Sanding sugar coating – Dip gently so the ghost keeps its shape. If gaps appear, sprinkle extra sugar over the top with a spoon.

  • Shaping details – Use a skewer or cocktail stick to press soft lines into the base for a draped, ghostly effect.

  • Face options – Candy melts, fondant circles, or even black buttercream dots all work as well as sprinkles. Tweezers make tiny details much easier to place.

  • Make ahead – Bake the cupcakes the day before and store unfrosted. Pipe and decorate the ghosts on the day or day before serving for best results.

  • Storage – Keep decorated cupcakes in an airtight container in the fridge and bring to room temp before serving.

Serving Ideas

  • Party platter – Arrange your ghost cupcakes on a black cake stand or spooky tray with cobweb decorations for a Halloween party centrepiece.

  • Mixed Halloween box – Pair them with Pumpkin Patch Cupcakes or Eyeball Cupcakes for a fun themed mix.

  • Kid-friendly – Skip the smiley faces and make them spooky for trick or treaters.

  • Grown-up twist – Serve with coffee or spiced hot chocolate for a cosy autumn dessert..

FAQ: Easy Ghost Cupcakes

Do I need sanding sugar?
Not essential, the ghosts will still look cute without it. But the sugar adds sparkle and makes the buttercream easier to handle.

Can I use store-bought frosting?
Yes, but homemade buttercream holds its shape much better and gives a smoother finish.

What piping tip works best?
A large round tip such as Wilton 2A or 1A is perfect for creating the ghost shape.

Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes — store finished cupcakes in an airtight container in the fridge, for up to 2 days. If you want to prep further in advance, freeze the undecorated cupcakes and add the ghosts closer to the event.

Can kids help with these?
Absolutely! Kids will love dipping the ghosts in sugar and adding faces.
