Easy Lion Cupcakes
The Mane Event: Easy Lion Cupcakes
These easy lion cupcakes are a fun and playful cupcake design for kids’ birthdays, jungle parties, safari themes and animal lovers. The fluffy buttercream mane is created using my simple Pipe and Swipe Technique, making these lion cupcakes surprisingly beginner-friendly while still looking impressive.
Decorated with bright buttercream, candy ears and adorable fondant details, these animal cupcakes are perfect for birthday dessert tables, bake sales and jungle-themed celebrations. If you enjoy fun character cupcake designs, you may also love my Dinosaur Cupcakes, Hedgehog Cupcakes and Tiger Cupcakes.
The Easy Lion Cupcake Design
This lion cupcake design uses my Pipe and Swipe Technique to create the textured buttercream mane. Orange buttercream is piped around the edge of each cupcake using a large open star tip, then gently swiped inward to create the fluffy fur effect.
The lion’s face is created using a large round piping tip and smoothed with a small spatula for a neat finish. I used yellow buttercream for the face and orange for the mane to create contrast and make the design pop. For help achieving vibrant shades, check out my Buttercream Colouring Guide.
Mini yellow M&Ms form the ears, a pink heart sprinkle creates the nose, and small fondant circles with tiny toothpick holes become the cheeks and whiskers. Black sugar pearls finish the design as the eyes.

Tools and Ingredients You’ll Need
Piping Bags
You’ll need two piping bags for this design — one for the orange buttercream mane and one for the yellow lion face. I prefer using large disposable piping bags as they give you more control when working with larger piping tips.
Extra-Large Round Piping Tip (Ateco 809)
The large round piping tip is used to pipe the smooth yellow buttercream face in the centre of the cupcake. The large opening helps create a full rounded shape quickly and evenly.
Large Open Star Piping Tip
The open star tip is used to pipe the orange buttercream dots around the edge of the cupcake which form the lion’s mane. Once swiped inward, the ridges from the piping tip create a fluffy fur texture.
Small Piping Tip or Decorating Tool
A small round piping tip or decorating tool is used to gently swipe the buttercream inward and create the pipe and swipe fur effect. This simple technique gives the cupcakes lots of texture and personality.
Small Metal Spatula
A small offset spatula helps smooth the buttercream face neatly before adding the lion details.
Toothpick
A toothpick is used to create the tiny whisker holes in the fondant cheeks and can also help position smaller decorations neatly.
Orange and Yellow Gel Food Colouring
Gel food colouring gives the buttercream bright vibrant colours without thinning the consistency. I used orange for the mane and yellow for the lion’s face. If you need help colouring buttercream, check out my Buttercream Colouring Guide.
Buttercream Frosting
You’ll need two shades of buttercream for this design. I recommend using my Basic Buttercream Recipe as it holds its shape well for piping and swiping techniques.
Mini Yellow M&Ms
Mini yellow M&Ms create the lion’s ears and add a fun candy detail to the cupcakes.
Pink Heart Sprinkles
Pink heart sprinkles are used for the lion’s nose and instantly give the cupcakes a cute expression.
White Fondant
White fondant is rolled thinly and cut into small circles to create the lion’s cheeks. Tiny whisker holes are added using a toothpick.
Black Sugar Pearls
Black sugar pearls finish the design as the lion’s eyes and help bring the character to life.
Tweezers (Optional)
Tweezers can make it easier to place the smaller decorations without marking the buttercream.
Ingredients
- 12 cupcakes
- 1 Batch of my basic buttercream
- Yellow food gel
- Orange food gel
- 24 mini-M&Ms (yellow)
- 12 pink love heart sprinkles
- 50g white fondant
- 24 black sugar balls
Equipment
- 2 piping bags
- 1 Extra large round piping tip (ATECO 809)
- 1 Large open star piping tip (6B)
- A small piping tip for spreading the buttercream
- A small metal spatula
- Tweezers
- Cocktail sticks
How to...
Step 1
Make a batch of my basic buttercream and divide it into two seperate bowls. Colour one bowl yellow and the other bowl orange. Add the orange to a piping bag fitted with a large star piping tip (6B)
Step 2
Use the orange buttercream to pipe a dot at the edge of the cupcake.
Step 2
Using the large end of a small piping tip to spread the buttercream dot into the centre of the cupcake.
Step 3
Continue this technique around the edge of the cupcake.
Step 4
Use a round piping tip to add a large dollop of yellow buttercream to the middle of the cupcake. Smooth it out with a spatula so that you have a nice flat surface to add the facial details.
Step 6
Add two yellow mini-M and Ms for ears by pushing them slightly into the buttercream at the top of the face. Then add a heart sprinkle for the nose. I like to use tweezers to add the small details, this avoids making finger holes in the buttercream.
Step 7
Roll out a piece of white fondant and use the large end of a small piping tip to cut out circles for the cheeks. Attach them to the lion’s face and then use a toothpick to poke whisker holes in each cheek.
Step 8
Add two black sprinkles for his eyes. Again, using tweezers will make this a lot easier.
The results
Well done. You just created the most ROAR-some cupcakes!
Notes & Tips
The pipe and swipe technique works best when the buttercream is soft and smooth but still able to hold its shape. If your buttercream feels too soft, chill it briefly before decorating.
Pipe the buttercream evenly around the cupcake to create a balanced lion mane with a neat circular shape.
Use gel food colouring rather than liquid colouring to achieve vibrant orange and yellow tones without thinning the buttercream.
For the smoothest lion face, use a small spatula to gently flatten and shape the yellow buttercream before adding the decorations.
If you don’t have mini M&Ms, small fondant circles or chocolate chips also work well for the ears.
The fondant cheeks can be prepared ahead of time and stored in an airtight container until ready to use.
Tweezers can make placing the smaller decorations much easier and help avoid fingerprints in the buttercream.
For the best piping consistency, I recommend using my Basic Buttercream Recipe.

Can I make these lion cupcakes in advance?
Yes. These cupcakes can be decorated up to two days in advance. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge, then allow them to come to room temperature before serving.

I used a large open star tip for the buttercream mane and an extra-large round tip (Ateco 809) for the lion’s face. Similar-sized piping tips will also work well.
What buttercream works best for this design?
