Pikachu Cupcakes
The Perfect Pokémon Party Cupcakes
I had to make Pikachu to go with our Poké Balls ❤️🖤
These Pikachu cupcakes are inspired by the iconic Pokémon character and make the perfect addition to a Pokémon birthday party. With a smooth yellow buttercream base, structured ears and simple chocolate details, they look detailed but are built from very manageable steps.
I love using Pocky sticks for structure in my cupcake designs. They’re lightweight, easy to trim and perfect for supporting taller elements like ears, antlers or character features. You’ll spot this technique in several of my designs because it keeps everything neat, stable and easy to recreate.
If you’re already making Poké Ball cupcakes, this is the natural next design to complete the set.
The Pokemon Cupcake Design
This design starts with a flat yellow buttercream top. I piped a generous dollop using a round piping tip, then smoothed it using the Flip and Freeze method. Pressing the buttercream on to parchment paper and chilling it creates that clean, even surface without any effort at all.
After freezing for 15 to 20 minutes, the buttercream becomes firm enough to carve. Using a sharp knife, I gently trimmed and softened the sides to shape Pikachu’s face. This small step transforms a simple circle into a more recognisable character shape.
For the ears, I used half Pocky sticks to create a strong internal structure. I love using Pocky in my cupcake designs because they are lightweight, easy to trim and perfect for supporting taller elements. Once inserted into the cupcake, I piped yellow buttercream directly over them using a smaller round piping tip to build smooth, rounded ears.
The tips of the ears were dipped into melted black chocolate/candy melts and left to set.
For the face details, I used black candy melts to pipe the eyes, nose and mouth, and red buttercream for the cheeks. Keeping the shapes simple makes the design clean and instantly recognisable.
To achieve the bright yellow shade, I coloured my buttercream using gel food colouring. If you are new to colouring buttercream, you can follow my Buttercream Colouring Guide for deeper, more vibrant tones without thinning the texture.
All of this is built using my basic buttercream recipe, which is structured enough for carving and shaping once chilled.
Simple layers. Clear steps. No complicated sculpting.
Why You’ll Love These Pikachu Cupcakes
They look impressive, but the method keeps everything manageable. Once you understand the Flip and Freeze step and how to shape the buttercream, the rest is simple layering.
They are instantly recognisable. The bold yellow base, red cheeks and black ear tips make the character clear without needing complicated detailing.
They pair perfectly with my Poké Ball cupcakes. If you are planning a Pokémon birthday party, this gives you a themed set without needing lots of different techniques.
And most importantly, they are built from basic tools and simple shapes. No special moulds. No advanced sculpting. Just steady piping and clean steps.
Things I Used
Cupcakes
Any flavour works for this design. Just make sure they are completely cooled before decorating so the buttercream holds its shape properly.
Basic Buttercream
One batch of my Basic Buttercream Recipe. This buttercream is stable enough to smooth, freeze and carve without collapsing.
Yellow Gel Food Colouring
I used gel colouring to achieve a bright, bold yellow without thinning the buttercream. If you are unsure how to get strong colours, see my Buttercream Colouring Guide for tips.
Large Round Piping Tip
Used to pipe the smooth buttercream base and a Wilton 1A to build the ears. A large round tip gives you clean, structured shapes.
Piping Bags
Two bags for the yellow buttercream, plus small bags for the black candy melts and red buttercream details.
Parchment Paper Squares
Used for the Flip and Freeze method to create a smooth, flat buttercream surface.
Pocky Sticks
Trimmed in half and inserted into the cupcake to provide structure for the ears. They are lightweight and perfect for supporting taller decorative elements.
Black Candy Melts
Used for the eyes, nose and mouth. They pipe cleanly and set firmly once cooled. I used Colourmill chocolate drip, it works great for dipping.
Red Buttercream
For the cheeks. A small round tip works well for neat placement.
Sharp Knife
Used to gently carve and shape the buttercream after freezing.
Tweezers (Optional)
Helpful for placing small details neatly without marking the buttercream.

How to...
Step 1
Before you begin, gather everything you need to make your Pikachu cupcakes.
Make one batch of my Basic Buttercream. Scoop out about 1/2 cup and colour it red for the cheeks, then set it aside until needed.
Colour the remaining buttercream yellow. This will be used for the face and ears, so make sure the colour is a bright yellow before piping.
Step 2
Line a tray that fits in your freezer with a sheet of parchment paper.
Add the yellow buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a large round piping tip such as Ateco 809. Pipe a large, even dollop of buttercream onto the centre of each cupcake.
Step 3
Carefully turn the cupcake upside down and place the buttercream directly onto the parchment-lined tray.
Gently press straight down so the buttercream spreads evenly and forms a smooth, flat surface. Keep the pressure centred and steady to avoid tilting.
Step 4
Place the tray in the freezer for around 15 minutes.
The buttercream should feel firm but not rock hard. It is ready when the cupcake lifts away cleanly from the parchment paper and the surface looks smooth and even.
If the buttercream sticks, return the cupcake to the freezer for a few more minutes before trying again.
Step 5
Using a sharp knife, carefully carve a gentle curve into the top sides of the buttercream to create Pikachu’s rounded face shape.
If the buttercream begins to soften while shaping, return it to the freezer for a few minutes before continuing.
Step 6
Push two halved Pocky sticks into the actual cake, not just the buttercream. This makes them much more secure and prevents the ears from moving.
Because the cupcake has been chilled, the cake will be firm. If needed, use a spare Pocky stick or a wooden skewer to gently create a small guide hole first, then insert the ears.
Position them slightly angled outward to give that classic Pikachu look.
Step 7
Add the yellow buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a 1A round piping tip.
Place the opening of the piping tip over the Pocky stick, right down to where it meets the cake. Squeeze steadily and pull upwards in the direction of the Pocky, allowing the buttercream to fully cover it.
Release the pressure before you reach the very top, then gently pull away to create a clean finish at the tip.
Place the cupcakes back onto the tray and refrigerate for 10 to 15 minutes. This allows the buttercream ears to firm up and hold their shape before dipping.
Step 8
Add the black candy melts and a small amount of vegetable shortening to a heatproof bowl.
Microwave on half power in 30 second bursts, stirring well between each interval. Continue until fully melted and smooth.
Heating gently and stirring between each burst helps prevent the chocolate from overheating or seizing. The shortening will thin the melts slightly, making it easier to dip the ears and achieve a smooth finish.
Step 9
Once the chocolate has cooled slightly but is still smooth, dip the ears into the bowl at a slight angle to create the classic Pikachu ear tip shape.
Gently shake off any excess chocolate and allow it to drip back into the bowl.
Hold the cupcake upright for a few seconds to let the coating settle, then place it back onto the tray to set.
If needed, use a small spatula or the back of a spoon to neaten the join where the black meets the yellow before it fully sets.
Step 10
Add the red buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a small round piping tip, such as a size 10.
Pipe two round circles onto the face to create Pikachu’s cheeks.
Using a small spatula or palette knife, gently smooth the surface of each cheek to create a flat, clean finish.
Step 11
Add the melted black candy melts to a piping bag and snip a very small opening at the tip.
Pipe the eyes, nose and mouth shapes onto a sheet of parchment paper. I prefer doing it this way as it avoids mistakes directly on the buttercream and allows you to remake any pieces if needed.
Allow the shapes to set until firm before carefully lifting them from the parchment paper. Use tweezers for more control when placing smaller pieces like the nose or mouth.
Step 12
Melt a small amount of white candy melts until smooth.
Using a cocktail stick, pick up a tiny amount of melted white chocolate and gently dot it onto the upper part of each eye to create the highlight.
Keep the dots small and consistent. This simple detail instantly brings the character to life and gives the eyes that glossy, animated look.
The Results! Well done.
And that is your finished Pikachu inspired cupcake
Notes & Tips
Keep them chilled
These cupcakes are best kept refrigerated until shortly before serving, especially in warm or humid climates. Chilling helps the buttercream hold its shape and keeps the ears firm and secure. I always do this with my cakes as the weather here can soften buttercream quickly.
Follow the Flip and Freeze method
If you are new to this technique, follow my Flip and Freeze method tutorial carefully for the smoothest finish. The buttercream should be firm but not frozen solid before shaping. This makes carving cleaner and helps the surface stay smooth.
Create different expressions
You can easily change Pikachu’s personality by adjusting the mouth shape or eye position. A curved smile gives a happy look, a small straight line makes him look serious, and slightly angled eyes can create a playful expression.
Adjust the ear positions
Try positioning the ears at different angles. More upright gives a classic look, slightly tilted adds movement and character. Just make sure they are inserted into the cake itself for stability.
Work in stages
If the buttercream softens at any point, return the cupcakes to the fridge for a few minutes before continuing. Working in stages keeps everything neat and controlled.
Make ahead
You can prepare the face details in advance and store them in an airtight container. Assemble the cupcakes on the day of serving for the freshest look.
