Cartoon Butterfly Cupcakes
A bright and playful design perfect for any occasion.
These Cartoon Butterfly Cupcakes are one of my favourite designs. They are bright, playful, and full of colour, and they always stand out on a dessert table.
I love working with candy melts for designs like this because they make it so easy to create bold shapes and clean lines. The butterflies have that fun cartoon look, while the buttercream grass underneath makes it feel like they’ve just landed in a little garden.
This butterfly cupcake design is a fun cupcake decorating tutorial that’s perfect for beginners wanting to try candy melts. They’re great for spring, birthdays, or even Mother’s Day when you want something a bit different. They may look detailed, but once you get the hang of the method, they’re very achievable.
The Design
For the base, I used my chocolate cupcakes, but any flavour works here. Each cupcake is topped with a layer of buttercream, crushed cookies for a soil effect, and bright green buttercream grass.
The butterflies are the main feature. They are made using candy melts, which I use all the time for designs like this as they melt smoothly, set firm, and hold their shape well. This makes them perfect for creating clean outlines and bold colours.
For best results, I recommend using candy melts rather than regular chocolate. Candy melts set without tempering, whereas regular chocolate needs to be properly tempered or it may not set or release cleanly. If you are new to using them, you can read my Candy Melts Guide for tips on melting, colouring, and getting the best finish.
You don’t need to worry about making the piping perfect here. The butterflies are meant to have a fun, cartoon style, so slight variations actually make them look better.
If you don’t have a silicone mould, you can pipe the wings onto parchment paper instead. It’s a great alternative, although it can take a little more control to keep the shapes even.
The butterflies are fully edible, lightweight, and easy to customise depending on your colour palette or theme.
Why You’ll Love These Cartoon Butterfly Cupcakes
These cupcakes are fun, colourful, and easy to customise for different occasions.
The butterfly toppers look impressive but are surprisingly simple to make using basic tools.
Everything is fully edible, including the wings, which makes them perfect for parties.
They work beautifully for spring themes, birthdays, or even Mother’s Day cupcake ideas.
Things I Used
Candy Melts
I used a mix of pre-coloured candy melts and white candy melts coloured with oil-based food colouring. I always buy black candy melts ready coloured, as they are much easier to work with.
Candy melts melt smoothly and set firm without tempering, which makes them ideal for this design. If you are new to using them, you can read more in my Candy Melts Guide.
Silicone Mould
I used a silicone mould to create the butterfly wings, which helps give a consistent shape and makes the process easier.
If you prefer, you can pipe the wings directly onto parchment paper instead.
Cupcakes
I used my chocolate cupcakes for this design, but any flavour works. Make sure they are fully cooled before decorating.
Buttercream
I recommend making half a batch of my Basic Buttercream. This is used to top the cupcakes and create the base for the design.
If you want a stronger green colour for the grass, you can use my Microwave Method to deepen the shade without affecting the texture.
Grass Piping Tip
I used a Wilton 233 piping tip to create the buttercream grass effect on top of each cupcake.
Piping Bags
Used for piping both the buttercream and candy melts. Disposable or reusable bags both work well.
Crushed Cookies
I used crushed chocolate biscuits, such as Oreos, to create a soil effect on top of the cupcakes.
Small Brush or Spoon
Helpful for spreading the candy melts and tidying up the butterfly outlines.
Edible Glitter (optional)
I like to add a light dusting of edible glitter for a bit of sparkle, but this is completely optional.
Ingredients
- 12 Chocolate Cupcakes
- 1/2 batch of my basic buttercream
- 25g Cocoa powder
- 2Tbsp Heavy cream
- Green gel food colouring
- 1 Cup of Crushed up chocolate biscuits
- 6 Matcha pocky sticks (cut in half)
- Candy melts (black, pink, purple, teal)
- Vegetable shortening
- Edible glitter (optional)
Equipment
- A large silicone half sphere mould
- 4 piping bags
- 1 large grass piping tip (Wilton 233)
- Tweezers
- A metal spatula
- Cocktail sticks
- A baking tray
- A sheet of parchment paper
How to...
Step 1
Make a batch of Basic Buttercream per the recipe instructions. Transfer a 1/3 of the buttercream to a separate bowl and set aside. Add the cocoa powder and the heavy cream to the rest of the buttercream and mix until smooth. Cover the bowl with cling film until your ready to use it. Add a drop of green gel colour to the smaller bowl of buttercream and mix it through. Continue to add a drop at a time until you achieve the perfect green. You don’t need much colour to get a gorgeous green, and remember that it will deepen in colour over time.
Step 2
Gently melt the black candy melts in the microwave using a low heat setting. Transfer the melted candy into a piping bag and trim a small portion of the tip to allow for controlled piping. If the opening is too large, the candy will dispense too quickly and become more difficult to control. Place the silicone mold upside-down on a baking tray and start piping the outline of the butterflies. They don’t have to be perfect, just have fun.
Step 3
To create the bodies, pipe the mixture onto the silicone mold for a curved appearance. Alternatively, piping flat onto parchment paper will work too. Allow all pieces to set at room temperature. Prepare the coloured candy melts and transfer them into piping bags.
Step 4
Using one colour of candy at a time, fill in the butterflies. Make sure that the candy has cooled down a little in the bag before you use it, if it is hot, it will melt the black outline. Transfer them to the fridge to set. You can use a cocktail stick to spread the candy into corners.
Step 5
Use a metal spatula to apply a thin layer of chocolate buttercream on the tops of the cupcakes. Hold each cupcake over the bowl of chocolate biscuit soil and sprinkle some along the edges, leaving a gap in the centre for the grass. Place green buttercream into a piping bag fitted with a large grass piping tip (234), and pipe grass into the middle of each cupcake.
Step 6
Once the grassy centres are piped, remove the chilled butterflies from the fridge. Use a wooden skewer to gently press the mold around the edges of each butterfly. You will feel them as they start to release, lift them off to reveal that gorgeous pattern. Carefully set them aside until you are ready to add them to the cupcakes.
Step 7
Push half a matcha pocky stick into the middle of each cupcake and add some melted candy to the top.
Step 8
Carefully sit a butterfly onto the top of the meted candy. Hold it in place for a minute until the candy sets. Add some melted candy to the back of the bodies and then stick them to the centre of the wings. I sprayed mine with edible glitter for some extra sparkle.
The result
Conratulations. You just created an absolute showstopper!
Notes & Tips
Candy Melts
Candy melts work best for this design as they set firm and hold their shape without tempering. This makes them much easier to work with than regular chocolate, especially for piping details like the butterfly wings.
If they feel a little thick, you can add a small amount of vegetable shortening to loosen the consistency. For more tips, you can read my Candy Melts Guide.
Chocolate Biscuit Soil
You can use chocolate biscuits or Oreos for the soil. Oreos give a darker, more realistic look, but lighter biscuits work just as well depending on the finish you prefer.
Remove the cream filling first, then crush into fine crumbs using a food processor or chop finely with a knife.
Butterfly Placement
You can also just sit the butterflies on top of the cupcake if you prefer, rather than pressing them into the buttercream. It gives a slightly different finish but still looks great.
Serving Ideas
Display on a wooden board or cake stand for a simple, clean finish.
Mix with other spring or floral cupcakes to create a themed display.
Package in individual boxes if you are making them for gifts or parties.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time?
Yes. You can bake the cupcakes and make the butterfly wings in advance. Store the wings in an airtight container and assemble on the day.
Can I freeze these cupcakes?
The cupcakes can be frozen undecorated for up to one month. I don’t recommend freezing them once the wings are attached.
How long will they keep once decorated?
Best enjoyed within 2 to 3 days. Store in an airtight container at room temperature, or refrigerate if needed.
Can I use fondant instead of candy melts?
Yes. Fondant or gum paste can be used, although they won’t have the same snap as candy melts.
Can I make the butterflies ahead of time?
Yes. They can be made a few days in advance and stored until ready to use.
Final Thoughts
These Cartoon Butterfly Cupcakes are one of those designs that look detailed but come together really nicely once you get into the process. I love how the candy melt wings bring them to life and make them stand out on any cupcake display.
