Things I Used
Here are the tools and ingredients I used to create these veggie planter cupcakes. You don’t need to match everything exactly — use what you have at home and swap where needed!
-
Cupcake tin + liners – A standard 12-cup pan lined with paper cases.
-
Piping bags – Disposable or reusable, one for each buttercream colour.
-
Grass piping tip (Wilton 233) – Creates the buttercream grass effect.
-
Small round piping tip (Wilton 4) – Perfect for piping carrot tops.
-
Buttercream – A batch of my basic buttercream recipe, divided and coloured. Use chocolate for the soil and green for the grass and carrot tops. Follow my Buttercream Colouring Guide for the brightest shades.
-
Wafer biscuits – Split into halves and cut to size to form the planter box walls.
-
Oreos – Crushed into crumbs to create realistic soil. (Remove cream filling for a finer crumb if desired.)
-
Orange M&Ms – Used as the carrot bases poking through the soil.
-
Rolling pin or food processor – To crush the Oreos into fine crumbs.
-
Small spatula or palette knife – For spreading buttercream and adjusting wafers.
-
Tweezers (optional) – Handy for placing candies neatly without smudging the buttercream.
Ingredients
- 12 Cupcakes
- Green buttercream
- 12 wafer biscuits
- 1 packet Oreos, crushed.
- 24 orange M and Ms
Equipment
- 12-cup cupcake pan
- 12 cupcake liners
- 2 piping bags
- 1 grass piping tip (233)
- 1 small round piping tip (4)
How to...
Step 1
Use the green buttercream and piping tip (233) to pipe the grass on top of the cupcakes. Start at the edges and work your way into the centre. Hold the piping tip just above the cupcake and squeeze out the buttercream, keep squeezing the bag whilst pulling up and then release the pressure and pull away in different directions.
Step 2
To make the planter boxes you need to split the wafer biscuits in two. Size the front piece of the box by sitting a wafer on top of the cupcake. Make sure it will fit in the centre, leaving space around the sides for the grass. Cut it to size. Match the piece for the back and then repeat this process for the side pieces. This is your template for the rest of the boxes.
Assemble the planter boxes on top of the grass. Push the bottom of the wafers into the buttercream, making sure that there are no gaps for the soil to leak through.
Step 3
For the soil, crush the packet of Oreo cookies into crumbs. You can use a food processor for this. Otherwise, you can put them in a zip lock bag and crush them with a rolling pin. If you are using the ziplock bag method, I always remove the cream filling for a finer crumb.
To add the soil, use a small spoon to pour it into your planter boxes. Be careful not to spill it on the grass.
Step 4
Push the orange candy into the soil, leave half poking out of the top to resemble the carrots.
Step 5
Use the green buttercream and piping tip (4) to pipe the carrot tops. Hold the bag upright with the tip touching the top of the carrot. Squeeze and pull away.

They’re playful, bright, and perfect for spring or Easter celebrations. Don’t forget to take a photo before they’re devoured!

FAQ
Can I use other candies for the vegetables?
Yes — jelly beans, Skittles, or fondant veggies also work well.
Can I make these in advance?
Bake cupcakes ahead, but add soil + wafers on the day for best results.
Do I need a grass tip?
It helps, but a small star tip can give a similar grassy look.
