Oreo Bat Cupcakes

Super Cute and Easy Oreo Bats

Finished Oreo Bat Cupcake — complete with wings, eyes, and fangs — sitting on parchment paper surrounded by Halloween decorations.

Spooky, chocolatey, and just plain adorable — these Oreo Bat Cupcakes are a no-fuss Halloween treat that’s as fun to make as it is to eat! A few Oreos, candy eyes, and a swirl of buttercream are all you need to turn simple cupcakes into the cutest little bats. Perfect for kids, parties, or anyone who wants a mess-free Halloween bake.

Oreo Bat Cupcakes Design

This design uses Oreos in the cleverest way — halved for wings and mini quarters for ears. The eyes and little sprinkle fangs bring them to life, and the chocolate smile finishes it all off. It’s a simple, satisfying project that looks like you’ve spent hours (but really takes no time at all!). I made the mini cupcakes using my Chocolate Cupcake Recipe

For the dark chocolate buttercream, I added dark cocoa and melted dark chocolate to a small bowl of my regular Buttercream Recipe. You could use regular chocolate buttercream if you prefer.

Things I Used

Here are the tools and ingredients I used to make these cupcakes. If you’re recreating them, these links will save you the guesswork:

  • Mini Cupcake TinI used a 24 cavity mini cupcake tin
  • Cupcakes – 12 of your favourite flavour. I used chocolate cupcakes as the base, but vanilla or cookies & cream work perfectly too.
  • Buttercream – ½ batch of my Buttercream Recipe. Chocolate or black-coloured buttercream gives a true “bat” look.
  • Oreos – Regular-sized Oreos for the wings (cut in half with a small serrated knife).
  • Mini Oreos – Cut into quarters to create little ears.
  • Candy Eyes – Medium size (around 1 cm) for that cartoon-style expression.
  • White Sprinkles – Two per cupcake for the fangs. You can use jimmies, pearls, or tiny sugar shards.
  • Pink Sugar Pearls (optional) – For the rosy cheeks.
  • Chocolate or Candy Melts – Melted and piped for the smile. I used dark chocolate, but black candy melts work great too.
  • Piping Bag + Large Round Tip (Wilton 1A) – For piping smooth buttercream mounds.
  • Parchment Paper + Tray – To press and freeze the cupcakes without sticking.
  • Small Serrated Knife – For neatly cutting the Oreos in half.
  • Tweezers (optional) – Handy for placing eyes and small decorations.

  • 24 Small pink sprinkles
  • 1/4 Cup melted dark chocolate

  • 2 Piping bags

How to...

Cutting Oreos in half with a small serrated knife — ready to make the bat wings.

Step 1

Seperate the Oreos and remove the cream filling. Use a small serrated knife to carefully cut each Oreos in half. A gentle sawing motion helps prevent them from cracking.

Piping two small dots of buttercream onto a cupcake to attach Oreo halves for the wings.

Step 2

Add the chocolate buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a large round piping tip (1A) Pipe a small dot of buttercream onto the side of your mini cupcake. Press an Oreo half into the dot so that it sits slightly angled, like an open wing.

Step 3

Repeat this step on the opposite side to create the second wing.

Piping a smooth swirl of chocolate buttercream on top of the cupcake using a large round tip.

Step 4

Add a large dome of buttercream in the centre of the cupcake between the wings.

Cupcake pressed gently onto parchment paper to flatten the top and form the bat shape.

Step 5

Place the cupcake face down onto a piece of parchment paper and press gently to flatten the buttercream slightly. Carefully push each wing down too so that they sit flush with the buttercream head. Transfer the baking tray to the freezer for about 20 minutes, or until the buttercream is firm and peels away from the parchment paper.

Step 6

Once firm, carefully lift the cupcakes from the parchment. You’ll have a smooth, perfectly shaped buttercream surface ready to decorate.

Adding mini Oreo quarters on top for ears.

Step 7

Seperate the mini Oreos and remove the cream centres. Use a small serrated knife to cut each Oreo into quarters. Add two Oreos to each cupcake for the bat ears, if needed add a small amount of buttercream to hold them in place.

Attaching candy eyes to the front of the cupcake.

Step 8

Add two candy eyes in the centre using a tiny dab of buttercream to secure them.

Piping a small chocolate smile and pressing two white sprinkles in for fangs.

Step 9

Melt the dark chocolate/ candy melts and add it to a piping bag, cut a small amount off the tip of the bag. Pipe a smile, then press in two white sprinkles for the fangs. Add tiny pink pearls for cheeks.

Notes & Tips

Can I make them in advance?
Yes — you can prep the wings, ears, and eyes ahead of time, then assemble the day of serving. If you are making them in advance, keep them in the fridge to prevent the Oreos from going soft.

Can I use white Oreos or another biscuit?
Absolutely! Golden Oreos make cute “albino bats,” or use any round sandwich cookie that holds its shape.

Can I colour the buttercream?
Yes — black or dark chocolate gives a true “bat” look, but purple or orange are fun Halloween twists too.

Do I need much buttercream?
No. You don’t need much buttercream to make these, if you are making a fresh batch then I’d recommend scooping some out into a bowl and turning it into chocolate buttercream. Then you can keep the rest white for your next project.

Serving Ideas

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time?
Yes! You can bake the cupcakes a day or two in advance and store them in an airtight container. Decorate them closer to serving so the buttercream and details stay fresh. The pretzel stick will soften inside the buttercream, if making them in advance id recommend using a pocky stick instead

Can I freeze these cupcakes?
You can freeze the undecorated cupcakes for up to one month. I don’t recommend freezing decorated cupcakes, as buttercream and fondant details may lose their shape when thawed.

What if I don’t have the exact piping tips or tools?
That’s no problem — you can swap for any similar-sized round tip, or even use a cut piping bag. The results may look a little different, but they’ll still be fun and delicious!

How long will they keep once decorated?
Decorated cupcakes are best eaten within 2–3 days. Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge and bring them to room temperature before serving for the best texture.

What if I don’t have tip 233?
You can cut a small hole in a piping bag to pipe strands, but tip 233 gives the best broom texture.
