Bunny Butt Cupcakes
Cute Easter Bunny Butt Cupcakes
These Easter Bunny Cupcakes feature my viral bunny butt design and are a smaller version of one of my most popular Easter cupcake ideas. I first created the original Bunny Butt Cupcakes a few years ago, and they quickly became a favourite for Easter baking. The full-size version is even featured in my book Cupcakes for Any Occasion.
For this tutorial, I wanted to create a mini version, and I think they might be even cuter. Their bite-sized shape makes them perfect for Easter dessert tables, party platters, or a fun baking project with kids.
Each cupcake looks like a little bunny diving head first into the garden, with fluffy coconut “fur”, tiny pink paws and a sprinkle tail.
I’ve even experimented with a chocolate version of this design, but these classic bunny butt cupcakes are still my favourite for Easter.
The Easter Bunny Cupcakes Design
The bunny shape starts before the cupcakes even go into the oven.
To create the little bunny bottom, a small foil ball, piping tip, or pie weight is placed beside the batter inside each cupcake liner before baking. This pushes the liner inward and creates the curved bunny shape once the cupcakes are baked.
To decorate, pipe two sections of buttercream using my Basic Buttercream Recipe fitted with a large round piping tip. This forms the bunny’s bottom in a soft upside down heart shape.
The buttercream is then gently pressed into desiccated coconut to give the bunny its fluffy fur texture.
For the feet, I used white candy melt buttons, which are the perfect size for mini cupcakes. Pipe pink candy melts onto each button to create the paw pads. If you’re new to working with candy melts, you can follow my Working with Candy Melts Guide for tips on melting and piping them smoothly.
Finish each cupcake with a small white sprinkle for the tail.
For serving, I like to place the cupcakes on crushed Oreo cookies to resemble soil, with a little green coconut and candy carrots to create a playful Easter garden display.

Things I Used
Here are the tools and products that helped bring these Santa Butts to life. You can use the same items or substitute with what you already have at home:
Cupcakes:
I used my vanilla cupcakes for these as they are my fave. The flavour works perfectly with the buttercream and coconut, but any cupcake recipe you love will work.
Mini cupcakes
Any flavour works for this design. I used mini cupcakes baked in foil liners so the cupcake shape holds when the foil ball is added during baking.
Basic Buttercream Recipe
A sturdy buttercream works best so the bunny body holds its shape when piped. I used my Basic Buttercream Recipe which pipes smoothly and is easy to work with.
Piping bags
One piping bag fitted with a large round piping tip is used to pipe the bunny butt. You will need one if you are piping the pink paw pads too.
Large round piping tip (1A)
This piping tip creates the smooth rounded buttercream shape that forms the bunny’s body.
Foil balls
Small foil balls are placed in the cupcake liners before baking. This creates the rounded bunny body shape once the cupcakes are baked.
Desiccated coconut
Pressed onto the buttercream to create the fluffy bunny fur texture.
White candy melts
Used to create the bunny feet. If you are new to working with candy melts you can follow my Working with Candy Melts Guide for tips on melting and piping them smoothly.
Pink candy melts or sprinkles
Used to pipe the little bunny paw pads.
Small white sprinkle
A single white sprinkle makes the perfect tiny bunny tail for the mini version.
Mini cupcake pan
Used to bake evenly sized mini cupcakes that are ideal for dessert tables and party platters.
Ingredients
- 24 Mini cupcakes
- 1/2 Batch of my basic buttercream
- 1 Cup Dessicated coconut
- 1/2 Cup candy melts (white)
- 1/4 Cup Pink candy melts
- 1 Tbsp Vegetable shortening
Equipment
- 24 Cavity mini cupcake tin
- 24 Mini white cupcake cases
- 24 Foil balls
- 3 piping bags
- 1 Large round piping tip 1A
- A shallow bowl and spoon
- A sheet of parchment paper
- Cocktail sticks (if needed)
How to...
Step 1
Make the cupcake batter according to your recipe instructions. Line a mini cupcake pan with cupcake liners and fill each liner about halfway with batter. To create the rounded butt shape, tuck a small foil ball between the liner and the tin so the liner curves in slightly. Make sure you only fill them half full so the cupcakes rise evenly and hold their shape as they bake.
Step 2
Bake the cupcakes according to the recipe instructions and allow them to cool completely before decorating.
Step 3
Make a batch of buttercream and transfer it to a piping bag fitted with a large round piping tip (1A) If needed, add a small amount of white food gel to keep the buttercream bright white.
Pour desiccated coconut into a shallow bowl so it is ready for coating the cupcakes.
Step 4
Use the white buttercream to pipe the bunny butt shapes onto the cupcakes. You are essentially creating an upside-down heart shape.
Starting on the bottom left side of the cupcake, squeeze a large dot of buttercream and pull the piping tip up and inward, releasing the pressure as you reach the top.
Step 5
Step 6
Pour the desiccated coconut into a shallow bowl. Gently press the buttercream side of each cupcake into the coconut, just enough to coat the surface without flattening or losing the shape of the bunny butt.
Step 7
This is the look you’re aiming for. The bunny butts should be fully coated in coconut to create a soft, fluffy texture. If any small spots are missed, use a spoon to gently sprinkle extra coconut over the buttercream and lightly press it into place.
Step 8
Use a cocktail stick to mark the centre line of the bunny butt. Gently press a straight indent down the middle to define the shape. If your piping already created a clean line, you can skip this step.
Step 9
Melt a small amount of pink candy melts in the microwave using short bursts on low heat, stirring between each burst until smooth. Transfer the melted pink candy melts to a small piping bag and cut off the tip.
Step 10
Place the candy melt buttons onto a sheet of baking paper. Pipe one larger dot of pink candy melt in the centre of each button to create the paw pad, then use the end of a brush or a wooden skewer to add three small dots above. Allow the candy melts to set completely before attaching them to the cupcakes.
Step 11
Attach the bunny feet to the base of the buttercream dome. I used a small dab of melted white chocolate to stick them in place, as they will not attach easily to the coconut. Hold each foot gently for a few seconds until it sets.
Step 12
Make a small indent in the buttercream first, then add a small white sprinkle to the top of the cupcake to create the bunny tail. Use a tiny dab of melted white chocolate to attach it so it stays in place on the coconut.
The Results! Well done.
Your mini bunny butt cupcakes are ready to serve. Display them on a plate of crushed Oreos to look like soil and add a little coconut coloured green for grass if you like. It creates a fun Easter scene and makes the bunny butts look like they are burrowing into the ground.
Notes & Tips
Paper liners work perfectly
Standard paper cupcake liners work well for this technique and still allow the cupcake to form the rounded bunny shape during baking.
What to use for shaping the cupcakes
Small foil balls work perfectly to create the bunny shape, but you can also use small piping tips or pie weights to create the same effect inside the cupcake liner.
Use a sturdy buttercream
A firm buttercream works best for piping the bunny shape and holding the coconut coating. My Basic Buttercream Recipe works well for this design.
Candy melts are perfect for mini cupcakes
Marshmallows are used in the original design, but they can look oversized on mini cupcakes. Candy melt buttons create perfectly sized bunny feet and give a neat finish.
Alternative to coconut
If you don’t like coconut, you can use white sprinkles or white sanding sugar instead. This still gives the bunny a fluffy texture while keeping the design bright and clean.
Work gently when coating the cupcakes
Press the buttercream lightly into the coating so the texture sticks without flattening the piped shape.
Keep cupcakes cool if needed
If your kitchen is warm, chill the decorated cupcakes briefly before serving to help the buttercream hold its shape.
Serving Suggestions
These Mini Bunny Butt Cupcakes are perfect for Easter parties, dessert tables, and spring celebrations.
For a fun Easter display, arrange the cupcakes on a tray of crushed Oreo cookies to resemble soil. Sprinkle a little green coloured coconut or sanding sugar around the tray to look like grass, then add a few candy carrots for a playful bunny garden scene.
They also look adorable served on a spring themed cake stand or arranged on a platter for an Easter brunch or afternoon tea.
Because they are mini cupcakes, they’re great for party platters and kids’ celebrations, and they make a fun baking project to decorate with children.
You could also package them in clear treat boxes or cupcake boxes for Easter gifts.
FAQ: Bunny Butt Cupcakes
Can I use store bought frosting for this design?
I don’t recommend it. Store bought frosting is too soft and won’t hold the piped shape or grip the sanding sugar properly. Use my Basic Buttercream for the best results.
Do I have to shape the cupcakes before baking?
It really helps. Adding foil balls or piping tips to curve the liners gives you the perfect rounded shape for bunny butts once decorated.
Can I make the feet ahead of time?
Yes. Making them earlier in the day (or even a few days before) is a great idea to save time.
How long do these cupcakes keep?
Store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Bring them out 10 to 15 minutes before serving so the buttercream softens slightly.
Can I make Bunny Butt Cupcakes without shaping the liners?
The shaped cupcake helps create the rounded bunny bottom that makes this design so recognisable. If you skip this step the cupcakes will still taste great, but they won’t have the same bunny shape.
Can I use marshmallows instead of candy melts for the feet?
Yes. The original version of this design uses marshmallows cut in half for the bunny feet. For the mini cupcakes I used candy melt buttons because they are smaller and fit the scale better.
Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time?
Yes. You can bake the cupcakes a day in advance and store them in an airtight container. Decorate them on the day of serving for the freshest look.
What piping tip should I use?
A large round piping tip such as a 1A works best for piping the bunny bottom shape.
Do I have to use coconut?
No. If you don’t like coconut, you can use white sprinkles or white sanding sugar instead to create the fluffy bunny texture.
Final Thoughts on Bunny Butt Cupcakes
These Mini Bunny Butt Cupcakes are one of those designs that always makes people smile. They look playful and detailed, but the decorating steps are actually very simple once you get the hang of shaping the cupcake and piping the buttercream.
The mini version makes them perfect for Easter dessert tables, party platters, or baking with kids. They’re quick to decorate in batches and the smaller size makes them even cuter.
If you try this design, have fun with the display. A tray of crushed Oreos, a little green coconut, and a few candy carrots can turn the cupcakes into a whole bunny garden scene.
