Cupcake Baking Essentials – My Must Have Equipment
The simple baking tools I use every day for perfect cupcakes.
You don’t need a fully kitted out kitchen to bake amazing cupcakes. Most of these tools are simple items you probably already own. Over time, I’ve worked out which pieces of equipment I use the most and which ones make the biggest difference to my baking. Here’s my go-to list of cupcake baking essentials. Start with the basics, and build your collection as you go.
Why These Tools Matter
Cupcakes might look simple, but there’s a science behind every step. The right equipment helps you:
-
Measure accurately so your cakes rise properly.
-
Bake evenly so you don’t get sunken centres or dry edges.
-
Decorate neatly so your designs look amazing, even at home.
I’ve learned the hard way that small changes in tools make a big difference. Investing in a few basics first means you’ll have more success (and less stress) every time you bake.
Things I Use
Mixing & Measuring Tools
-
Stand mixer (or hand mixer): I use a KitchenAid now, but I started out with the cheapest hand mixer I could find, and it still worked great. A stand mixer just makes life a lot easier and saves time.
-
Digital weighing scales: Baking is a science, so accuracy matters. I weigh everything for consistent results.
-
Measuring spoons: I don’t use cups, but I do rely on spoons for small amounts. Always level them off unless the recipe says “heaped.”
-
Mixing bowls: I have lots, in all different sizes. I use large ones for baking and smaller ones my buttercream colours.
-
Whisk & sieve: A sturdy metal whisk and a sieve for dry ingredients.

Baking Basics
-
Cupcake tins: I have lots of 12 hole cupcake tins, but one or two tins is all you need.
-
Cupcake liners: I love foil liners because they don’t go greasy, and they come in lots of fun colours.
-
Oven thermometer: All ovens run differently. Knowing the real temperature makes such a difference.
-
Kitchen timer: I always use one for baking and mixing.
-
Cookie scoop: My large scoop holds 3 tbsp of batter, which fills liners perfectly and keeps your cupcakes even.

Decorating Tools
-
Rubber spatulas: My absolute favourite tool. I use them for everything — scraping, folding, scooping.
-
Palette knife (offset spatula): Great for spreading and smoothing buttercream.
-
Piping bags: I mainly use 12-inch and 18-inch bags. Thick plastic ones (like Wilton or Colourmill) are my favourite.
-
Piping tips: Large round tips, small round tips, and decorative tips like the Sultan are my most used.
-
Baking trays: Handy for moving things in/out of the fridge or freezer.
-
Parchment paper, cling film, foil: Always handy. I keep spares so I never run out mid-bake.
Beginner vs Advanced Tools
If you’re just starting out:
Focus on the basics — a hand mixer, digital scales, a cupcake tin, liners and some piping bags and tips. That’s really all you need to make beautiful cupcakes.
If you want to level up:
Add tools like a stand mixer, a variety of piping tips, a cookie scoop, and offset spatulas. These don’t just make life easier — they give you the chance to experiment with more creative designs.
Where I Buy My Tools
I often get asked where I shop for equipment. Here are my go-to places:
Wilton – great piping tips, bags, and novelty tools.
Colourmill – the best oil colours, i love them. They also do lots of amazing chocolate drips that can also be used to make cupcake decorations.
Amazon – easy for bulk items like cupcake liners and spatulas.
Local cake decorating shops – I love supporting small businesses, and they sometimes stock unique moulds and sprinkles you can’t find elsewhere.
Notes & Tips
You don’t need every gadget under the sun to make beautiful cupcakes.
Start with the basics and build your collection over time.
With just a handful of essential tools, you can bake, decorate, and create cupcakes that look as amazing as they taste.
Cupcake Baking Essentials FAQ
Do I need a stand mixer to make cupcakes?
No! A simple hand mixer works perfectly well. A stand mixer just saves time and effort.
What’s the first tool I should buy?
I recommend digital scales — accuracy is everything in baking.
Are foil liners better than paper ones?
Yes, I prefer them. Foil liners don’t go greasy and they hold their shape better, especially for buttercream-heavy designs.
Final Thoughts
Baking is so much more enjoyable when you have the right tools. This list is what I use in my own kitchen every day — it keeps things simple, consistent, and fun.
