Witch’s Broom Cupcakes
These Witch’s Broom Cupcakes are spooky, fun, and so simple!
Witch season is here and these witch’s broom cupcakes are the perfect Halloween treat! They look spooky, fun, and a little magical. The best bit? They’re actually really simple to make, all you need is buttercream, pretzel sticks and a small piece of fondant. Whether you’re baking for a party, a classroom treat, or just a fun October activity, these cupcakes will fly straight to the top of your favourites list.
The Witch’s Broom Cupcake Design
These Witch’s Broom Cupcakes are such a fun mix of spooky and sweet. The broom bristles are piped using my chocolate buttercream recipe, tied with a band of fondant, and finished with a pretzel stick handle. Add a dusting of edible glitter to make them sparkle like something straight out of a spell book.

Things I Used
Here are the tools and ingredients I used to make these cupcakes. If you’re recreating them, these links will save you the guesswork:
- Cupcake tin + liners: I used purple foil liners for a bright halloween vibe.
- Chocolate Buttercream: Piped to create the broom bristles.
- Piping Tips 8B + 6B: For adding the structure. You could use any round or star tip for this part.
- Piping Tip 233: The grass piping tip is perfect for making textured strands that look like broom bristles.
- Pretzel Sticks: For the broom handles. You could also use pocky sticks for the handles.
- Yellow Fondant: Rolled into a band to “tie” the broom together.
- Edible Glitter Spray: For that magical finishing sparkle.
Ingredients
- 12 Chocolate cupcakes
- 1 Batch of my basic buttercream (Chocolate Flavour)
- 12 Pretzel sticks
- A small amount of yellow fondant
- Edible glitter (optional)
Equipment
- 3 Piping bags
- 1 Extra large star piping tip (8B)
- 1 Large star piping tip (6B)
- 1 Small grass piping tip (233)
- A small metal spatula
How to...
Step 1
Make a batch of my basic buttercream (chocolate flavour) per the recipe instructions. Scoop out some of the chocolate buttercream and add it to a piping bag fitted with a large piping tip (8B) Pipe a dollop of chocolate buttercream onto the cupcake, placing it slightly off-centre to the left.
Step 2
Switch piping tips to the smaller size (6B) Add a dollop of buttercream onto the top of the first one, making it a little smaller and slightly to the left.
Step 3
Repeat this step for a third time, adding a smaller dollop onto the top. It should resemble a leaning Christmas tree. If the piped buttercream seem a bit soft, pop the cupcakes in the fridge for five minutes to firm it up before the next step.
Step 4
Push a pretzel stick at a slight angle down through the centre of the buttercream layers, keep pushing until it goes into the cupcake to secure the stick in place. The pretzels will soften slightly inside the buttercream. f making these in advance, store them in the fridge to keep the sticks firm. (You can also use chocolate-covered Pocky sticks as an alternative.)
Step 5
Fill a piping bag fitted with a grass tip (Wilton 233) with the remaining chocolate buttercream. Starting at the cupcake base, pipe straight lines upward toward the pretzel stick. Work your way around the cupcake, then add a second layer for a fuller effect. If the bristles aren’t even, trim the tops gently with a sharp knife for a tidy finish.
Step 6
Work your way around the cupcake, then add a second layer for a fuller effect. If the bristles aren’t even, trim the tops gently with a sharp knife for a tidy finish.
Step 7
Use a metal palette knife to create an indent towards the top of the broomstick.
Step 8
Roll out a piece of yellow fondant into a thin sausage and cut it into 12 pieces (each should be approx 2 cm long) Add the fondant into the indent, wrap it around the pretzel stick and trim off any excess. Press lightly so it sticks in place, this makes the broom tie.
Step 9
Dust the cupcakes with edible glitter for a magical finish.
The results! Well done!
Your Witch’s Broom Cupcakes are complete! Spooky, sparkly, and perfect for Halloween. They’re sure to impress your guests.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time?
Yes! You can bake the cupcakes a day or two in advance and store them in an airtight container. Decorate them closer to serving so the buttercream and details stay fresh. The pretzel stick will soften inside the buttercream, if making them in advance id recommend using a pocky stick instead
Can I freeze these cupcakes?
You can freeze the undecorated cupcakes for up to one month. I don’t recommend freezing decorated cupcakes, as buttercream and fondant details may lose their shape when thawed.
What if I don’t have the exact piping tips or tools?
That’s no problem — you can swap for any similar-sized round tip, or even use a cut piping bag. The results may look a little different, but they’ll still be fun and delicious!
How long will they keep once decorated?
Decorated cupcakes are best eaten within 2–3 days. Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge and bring them to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
What if I don’t have tip 233?
You can cut a small hole in a piping bag to pipe strands, but tip 233 gives the best broom texture.
Final Thoughts
Sometimes the simplest decorations create the most magical results. These Witch’s Broom Cupcakes are easy enough for beginners but look like they’ve flown right out of a witch’s kitchen.
